PGT Door Installation: The Palmetto Bay Owner’s Guide

Most PGT door installation work in Palmetto Bay runs between $350 and $1,400 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing rollers, hinges, weatherstripping, or the full panel. We stock common PGT hardware on the truck and can typically complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. What we see most often is a door that started dragging in March, binds by July when the humidity peaks, and by October the homeowner is lifting the slab just to get it to latch. That progression is normal wear, but ignoring it turns a $95 roller replacement into a $900 track and panel job.

We’re an independent service provider, not a PGT affiliate, but we’ve installed and repaired PGT doors in this part of Miami-Dade for going on two decades. Dale Kessler grew up near Old Cutler Road, where the older homes taught him early that South Florida weather has no patience for shoddy work. If it is not right in the opening, it will not be right in a hurricane.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s door lines break down into three families you’ll actually find in Palmetto Bay homes: the WinGuard series (impact-rated, aluminum frame), the ClassicVue series (impact or non-impact, broader sightlines), and the older SpectraGuard models still in service on homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Most hardware inside these doors is series-specific, not universal. A WinGuard hinge will not seat correctly on a ClassicVue panel, and the roller assemblies differ by as much as a quarter inch in stalk height between generations.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that costs owners money: PGT changed the roller housing design on WinGuard doors around 2016. Pre-2016 doors use a riveted steel bracket; post-2016 doors use a crimped stainless cup. They are not interchangeable, and forcing one into the other chews up the bottom track in a season. We match by measuring the existing roller with the door off the track, not by reading the glass etching. The etching tells you the glass spec; the hardware tells you the door’s true generation.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we recommend OEM rollers and hinges for any PGT door under active warranty, because the manufacturer will void the hardware portion if they see non-PGT parts during a claim. For out-of-warranty doors, a quality aftermarket roller with a sealed bearing often outlasts the original by a few years. We’ll quote both on paper, side by side, so you see exactly what you’re buying.

We also stock compatible hardware for Andersen, and Pella doors when the job calls for it.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

  • The door drags or scrapes along the bottom track. This is almost always a roller failure. In Palmetto Bay, salt air off Biscayne Bay corrodes the roller bearings faster than inland Miami, and once a bearing seizes, the roller flats and grinds the track.
  • You have to lift the door to get it to latch. The panel has settled because a roller wore down unevenly or a hinge screw pulled loose from the frame. Lifting it daily bends the lock hardware, and before long the deadbolt will not throw at all.
  • The door feels like it catches halfway open or closed. A track that was not pitched correctly on the original install, or one that has shifted as the slab settled, causes the panel to hang. In older Palmetto Bay homes near the bay side, slab micro-settlement is common and shows up first at the door tracks.
  • You hear a grinding or clicking sound when the door moves. That sound is metal on metal. It means the roller housing is loose inside the stile or the bearing has disintegrated. Continuing to run the door will gouge the track beyond repair.
  • Water stains or soft spots appear at the door’s bottom corners. The weatherstripping under the panel has compressed or torn, and Palmetto Bay afternoon thunderstorms push water sideways hard enough to find any gap. A wicking door panel is a rot problem waiting on a $1,200 replacement if we catch it late.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Palmetto Bay, a roller replacement on a PGT sliding door runs $180 to $340 installed per panel. A hinge replacement on a swing door runs $120 to $260. Full hardware rebuilds on an impact door, where we replace rollers, hinges, handles, and weatherstripping in one visit, run $550 to $950. A full panel swap on a WinGuard door, which is rare but happens after major storm damage or an attempted break-in, starts around $1,400 and depends on the glass package.

Every quote includes parts, labor, disposal of the old hardware, and a written line-item breakdown before we start. We do not change the price once the work begins, and we do not add surprise line items to the bill. The work carries our Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, no paperwork and no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

Sliding door rollers and hinges are not a spring-tension situation the way a garage door is, so an owner can safely pop off a plastic cap and inspect the roller without risk of serious injury. What we caution is the DIY video approach. Most of those videos show someone removing the door panel with two screwdrivers and a floor jack, and that is where it goes sideways. A PGT impact panel weighs upwards of 180 pounds. If it drops, it damages the frame, cracks the tile, and can break a foot.

What an owner can safely do: check the track for debris, wipe down the rollers, and note exactly where in the travel the door drags. That information helps our technician diagnose faster. Then call us at (386) 200-9224. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a roller, a hinge, or a track issue, and we’ll give you a straight price range before we schedule the visit.

What Neighbors Say About TruePane Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"Whole-house window replacement at 71 years old is not something you want to do twice. Dale walked the house himself for the quote. Crew was the same three men all four days, and the foreman knew every window by room."

PPat and Ray L.
★★★★★

"Impact windows on the whole house. They handled the permit, the inspection, and gave me a folder with every approval number for the insurance company. My windstorm premium dropped enough to notice."

BBill T.
★★★★★

"Eleven windows replaced in two days. The crew chief, Marcus, showed me the level on every single frame before they caulked it. My wife noticed the street noise was gone before I did."

RRonald P.
★★★★

"Two entry doors. Showed up when they said, second day was a half day like they said, and the painter they recommended confirmed the frames were dead plumb. The financing was explained in actual dollars, not a brochure."

JJanet R.
★★★★★

"A casement crank had stripped and the sash was swollen shut. The technician, Ray, fixed the crank on the spot and only then talked about replacement for the three windows that were genuinely done. That is why the whole street uses them now."

EEleanor G.
★★★★★

"French doors to the patio, custom size because this house was built in 1961 and nothing is standard. Measured twice, three weeks to fabricate like they warned, and the install day they laid runners over my floors without being asked."

MMarie S.
★★★★★

"Our bay window had rotted at the sill and two other outfits wanted to talk us into a flat picture window instead. TruePane rebuilt the opening and matched the original look. Neighbors have knocked on the door about it."
